As a dedicated sustainable designer, I am committed to creating high-quality, environmentally-friendly design solutions that help my clients achieve their branding and marketing goals while minimising their environmental impact.

How I make my business more sustainable

Eco-Friendly Materials: I prioritise the use of recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable materials in all my print designs. From packaging to stationery, I carefully select materials that reduce waste and promote a circular economy.

Low-Impact Printing: My print designs are produced using sustainable printing methods, including vegetable-based inks and waterless printing technologies, which significantly reduce harmful emissions and water consumption.

Digital-First Approach: By emphasising digital design and digital-first marketing strategies, I help my clients reduce the need for physical materials and lower their carbon footprint. My digital solutions include social media assets, email templates, and online branding guides that are both effective and sustainable.

Efficient Resource Use: I implement resource-efficient design practices to minimise waste during the design process. This includes meticulous planning, precision in material use, and reusing and repurposing design elements wherever possible.

Remote Work: My business operates primarily remotely, reducing the need for commuting and lowering my overall carbon emissions. Additionally, my studio mostly runs mostly on solar power, minimising my environmental footprint. This also allows me to work with clients globally, promoting sustainability beyond my immediate community.

Green Office Practices: In my day-to-day operations, I adopt green office practices such as reducing paper use, recycling, and using energy-efficient devices. I also support a paperless workflow, storing and sharing documents digitally whenever possible.

Ethical Partnerships: I collaborate with suppliers and partners who share my commitment to sustainability. This ensures that every aspect of my projects, from conception to completion, aligns with my environmental values.

Continuous Improvement: Sustainability is an ongoing journey. I stay informed about the latest developments in sustainable design and continuously seek new ways to improve my practices. By embracing innovation and adapting to new sustainable technologies, I strive to set a standard for environmentally-conscious design.

From Awareness to Action

The Journey of Shell Creative design studio

Driven by my newfound purpose, I frantically researched looking for answers, and found myself immersed in the world of sustainable design. I scoured resources, explored innovative practices, and connected with like-minded professionals. This journey not only deepened my understanding of sustainability — but also solidified my resolve to integrate these principles into my work.

Graduating with a clear vision, I set out to become a sustainable designer. However, the job market presented a challenge: I couldn't find a position that aligned with my environmental values. Rather than compromising my principles, I chose to carve my own path.

Shell Creative Design Studio was born—a place where I could practise my love of design whilst caring for the environment.

I’m not just designing for today; I want to shape a better tomorrow. I am dedicated to supporting small businesses that share my values, fostering a community of environmentally-conscious entrepreneurs. I aim to become a certified B corporation and to soon start donating to environmental regeneration and wildlife conservation projects.

Creativity has always been a big part of my life. I spent a large amount of my childhood out in nature, getting my hands covered in dirt and sand and drawing constantly. While my classmates could name all of the Pokemon, I was learning the names of every plant and animal I could, both existing and extinct.

As I got older I developed a love of art, fostered by spending hours in my aunt and uncle’s studio painting. I was introduced to design at around 16 and developed a keen interest in it. By the time I finished high school, I decided to pursue design as a career. I applied for and was accepted into Swinburne’s Bachelor of Design degree.

In the midst of studying, I was working on one particular assignment, focusing on sustainability issues. It turned out to be more than just an academic exercise for me; it became the catalyst for a profound shift in my career path.

As I researched the topic, I was struck by the staggering amount of waste produced by the design industry. This was a turning point, making me question whether I wanted to be part of an industry contributing so heavily to environmental degradation. Rather than deterring me, this realisation fueled my determination to make a difference.

Meet the Team

Drake

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Drake oversees all of the creative work at the Studio. He is a huge asset to the team and is present during all important decisions.
When he’s not busy at the studio, you’ll find him doing zoomies and trilling around the house, annoying Pepper, watching TV, playing with his favorite toy ‘Squiddy’ or napping on a fluffy blanket.
Pepper

HUMAN RESOURCES
Pepper is the head of human resources. She is constantly caring for the team, by providing support and encouragement.
In her spare time, Pepper enjoys cuddles, being sassy, getting into mischief, napping and reminding Shelley that she needs to be fed (by biting her) . She doesn’t enjoy being annoyed by Drake.
Yuumi

DESIGN ASSISTANT
Yuumi is is an integral part of the team. She assists with the day to day design tasks at the Studio.
Her hobbies include napping, eating and napping some more. She also enjoys snuggling up with her humans, playing, doing zoomies and cuddling up on her fluffy heating pad.
